English (Gr. 4 - 6)

If you think that English is just an unending series of tenses and word classes, think again!

At Laerskool Elarduspark it is the private mission of each English teacher to create a love for the language and to equip the learners to be competent readers and speakers so that they can fully realise their potential in our beautiful country and abroad because language is the tool for thought and communication.

At our school we follow the communicative approach. This means that nothing is taught in isolation but the relevance of each aspect is explained and context is paramount.

As prescribed by the National Curriculum statement the main emphasis is placed on listening, speaking and reading, writing and language structure and conventions.    All our teachers are highly trained and at the forefront of their subject. They frequently attend seminars and workshops to make sure they are equipped and that the learners get the best there is to offer.

At Elarduspark we focus on what can be done with the language.  In order to achieve success in our mission the text-based approach and the communicative approach are followed.

In the text-based approach a wide variety of different texts are studied to ensure that the learners become competent, confidant and critical readers, writers, viewers and designers of texts.

A communicative approach suggests a great deal of exposure to English and many opportunities to produce the language by communicating for social and practical purposes.

Every learner is encouraged to work hard and try their best. In addition to the normal classroom activities we are proud of our level of public speaking.  An Orator’s event is held during the second term for learners from grade 4 to 7.  Visiting teachers and adjudicators are without fail very impressed with our learner’s competence in both prepared and unprepared speaking.

Learners are also encouraged to participate in olympiads and competitions which might arise.

We pride ourselves in the fact that we prepare learners to choose between English as First Additional Language or English as Home Language in High School.

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited." – Plutarch.

We as English department strive to ignite the fire.
